At Gravitas we are proud to create and work in environments that are positive and welcoming to everyone, and we’re always looking for new ways to make our Gravitonian’s feel involved and supported. We know the importance of having open conversations and giving people the confidence to use terms that make others feel included when we do, which is why we launched the D&I committee.
What Is The Gravitas D&I Committee?
The committee was created to bring together a diverse group of Gravitonian’s to share their thoughts on how we can continue to grow as a fair and equal company with progressive measures in place.
We wanted to provide a dedicated time and place to explore and plan the ways that we can keep moving forward and thriving, as well as the chance to create insightful, educational content. As a result, we’ve also had conversations with clients about the importance of D&I within recruitment and the wider corporate world, to help us spread our learnings and ideas.
What Does D&I Mean?
D&I stands for Diversity and Inclusion but can be used as a broader term to encompass the different work we do to create positive, welcoming spaces and opportunities for everyone no matter their heritage or background.
Diversity is about recognising difference, acknowledging the benefit of having a range of perspectives in decision making and the importance of a workforce being representative of the organization’s customers.
Inclusion is when people’s differences are valued and used to enable everyone to thrive. An inclusive working environment is one where everyone feels that they belong without having to conform, that their contribution matters, and they can perform to their full potential, no matter their background, identity or circumstances. Inclusive workplaces have fair policies and practices in place so a diverse range of people can work together effectively.
How Else Does Gravitas Recruitment Support Diversity, Inclusion And Equality?
After the death of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020, we knew we had to show our support and put measures in place to keep making positive changes. That’s why we co-founded Programme One with seven other leading recruitment groups.
Programme One was launched in 2021 with a common goal in mind – to remove the inequalities that ‘restrict and inhibit the engagement of Black talent in the recruitment sector’ and with the aim of increasing the number of Black recruiters by 500 each year to combat systemic racism and deliver meaningful change.
Key D&I Terms To Remember:
Equality: Equality is the condition under which every individual is treated in the same way and is granted the same rights and responsibilities regardless of their individual differences.
Prejudice: A pre-judgement or unjustifiable, and usually negative attitude of one type of individual or groups towards another group and its members. Such negative attitudes are typically based on unsupported generalisations (or stereotypes) that deny the right of individual members of certain groups to be recognised and treated as individuals with individual characteristics.
Racism: Racism is grounded in a presumed superiority based on racial heritage or ethnic background.
Institutional Racism: The collective failure of an organisation to provide an appropriate and professional service to people because of their colour, culture or ethnic origin.
